Merry Christmas!

Hey all!

Merry Christmas & Happy Boxing Day!!

I hope you all had a great Christmas and are relaxing and shopping today! I had a great Christmas – as always! – and am not doing any Boxing Day shopping this year for the first time in years!

Par usual, I ate too much at Christmas and for the pas few days, and feel its time to get myself back together. I have been feeling crappy and soooo tired so time to get myself back!

In a way to make my body feel healthy again I headed to the gym for some cardio. I did 45 minutes on the Arch trainer, and 10 min on the stationary bike. Wah I was draggin my ass. That Arch trainer really kicked my butt, where this same workout usually feels challenging but not that hard. Just goes to show that it doesn’t take long to loose your endurance!

I got a new camera for Christmas (woohooo) but don’t have any pictures to share with you because I don’t have a memory card (booo).

I’ve been trying to get some runs in but I am just feeling sluggish and my pace is hurting. More of a reason to start eating better.

I need to start brainstorming goals for the year. On the docket so far is: sub-30 5K, run a 10K, run a half, get to my goal weight and maintain, just be a generally healthy balanced person, but what ellllllse? I will think over the next few days. The first three are my main goals though, in therms of fitness.

Anyways, I should go online window shop now.

Santa Shuffle 5K PR!

Hello and Happy December to you!

I’m so excited it is December! Only 2 more weeks left of placement, then two weeks off and back to school <–boo to that haha.

Let’s talk about what happened yesterday!!

As I said the Santa Shuffle for Salvation Army was originally a road race but for various reasons it was kicked to a track, a horse racing track at that.

The track was loose gravol, and we were expecting rain. Thank goodness that held off. Around 10am everyone headed to the far side of the track to begin the race. This was a fun run so there was no chip timing or start line, nothing fancy. The pros of that is all the proceeds went to the Salvation Army and helped people in need this Christmas. Win, win.

They said go and we were off. The race was a 5K, and the track was half a mile long. So we did 6.5 laps total for the race. I was freezing the first bit. There was a bit of a head wind, but nothing major. The track was angled, so I tried to stay low. I felt the angle in my ankles the most.

Mile splits: 9:44, 9:45, 9:52, :53, 1:31

The  :53 seconds is for the .10 of a mile, which I beeped my watch at for my 5k time, and the 1:31 is for the rest of the .17 miles, to finish.

I am very happy and excited about my time. First, ALL of my miles are in the 9 min/mile range. Even if they are at the top portion, they are not in the 10s anymore. This is HUGE for me, HUGE. I am excited just typing this. You see, I’ve been in the 10s forever, and just in the past few weeks has my running pace really picked up. Couldn’t tell ya why but it has. I have also been training at a faster pace. Been doing short tempo runs at a 9:45 pace, and some speed work as well. The other day I ran a mile at 6.5mph.

Anyways, this shows me that I CAN get faster, it just takes time and hard work. My goal for 2013 is to run a sub-30 5K, and this just shows me that it is more than possible. I didn’t train for this race, so with some training I could achieve this goal.I know that this run was easy because it was a track run, but still, I’m taking the PR and running with it <–pun.

At the finish line, well actually once we were back inside the Casino, we were handed our finishers medals, and an Advent Calendar. a Lindt one at that!!! I tweeted yesterday morning how I didn’t have an advent calendar yet this year, and then I got one at the finish. My kinda race. Now I get a little chocolate every day for this month, and a nice reminder of my PR!!!!!!Photo: An Advent calendar at the finish line, my kinda race.

The race was not what I expected, but it was fun and I am SO glad I did it. A part of me wishes I could have just run 16 seconds faster, for my 5K time to be in the 29 min, but that’s what my next race is for, right 😉 Off to eat my chocolates!

What a Flop

I’m off to run our local 5K Santa Shuffle, which started as a road race and was changed to a track race. So instead of running through the streets of London seeing different things, enjoying my time on the route, I will be running 7 laps around the half-mile track. Joy.To.The.World. Can you sense my excitement? Nah, me either. I don’t like how it was switched to a track race, I HATE track running. Anyways, it will be fun, I’ll come back and let you know if I complete all 7 laps. I’m one of those people who would rather run a road race and not know where the end is, than run 7 laps. I become unmotivated quickly. At lease there is a Santa metal at the finish. Or there better be haha.

But I digress. I came here to talk about my Paleo challenge. Well it was a big ‘ol flop. Womp. womp. I started off yesterday with good intentions. Had a egg, turkey bacon and a grapefruit for breakfast, and a coffee with milk. Lunch was a salad, apple. Drive home snack was nuts. Doing well right?

Well by the time I got home, I was starving! The first thing I saw were those deathly peanut butter pretzels, had 8. Then I had a 90 calorie pack of chocolate covered blueberries. or 2. Dinner was a burger patty (skipped the bun), salad, and a few french fries. Not too bad. oh and some ketchup. Then I had some snacks with my nephew, we had some candy. Not Paleo.

   

This morning I had a small bowl of oats with chocolate protein powder and milk, and am sipping on a coffee with milk. All of which not paleo. So here’s the thing, I gave up. clearly. I could make excuses, but  why? It doesn’t matter really. I’m not really all that disappointed in myself. I’m more concerned about the amount of junk I’m eating. So here is what I’m going to do.

Cut back on sugar. This is the big one! I just need to get rid of it! My God its horrible. I just have to say no. I am going to get some dark chocolate and have a square every day, as I have in the past, and see how it goes.

Sure I love carbs, but there are days when I won’t eat carbs at all. Oatmeal is a staple in my breakfast rotation. I love it, its easy, and I don’t overeat it. I almost always use my 1/3 cup as a scoop, which is only 110 calories. Oats are healthy and fill me up, so I’m not going to stop eating them.

I am going to try to eat Paleo, but not completly cut whole food groups from my diet. For me this is rediculous and unrealistic. As soon as I say I can’t have something, I want it more. Alas return of the greek yogurt, cheese sticks and english muffins. Couldn’t be more happy.

So my Paleo stunt was a fail, but I am still going to loosely stick to it. Cut down on sugar, carbs and dairy. Amp up my fruits and veggies. Reasonable. Realistic.
